My day in the Roman army - Fishbourne Roman Palace

Today we went to see a roman army museum where we learned what it was like to be in the roman army as a soldier.

We tried all the food that they ate back then and got a gruesome wound that was a sword wound.

We also got a tattoo like the centurions would have had when they joined the army.

here is a picture of a sword wound on my arm

After that we went to throw some stones at logs that had toys on them.

Then we got to throw spears at Celtic warrior.

We then had a drill sergent teach us how to march and fight like a centurion. We had to speak a bit of latin as well.

At last we got to charge at our parents after a fighting session.

I learnt alot about the Roman Armies at Fishbourne Roman Palace.

Charles Darwin - Downe House

Charles Darwin had a house in kent called Downe House. We went there today.

Charles Darwin was a explorer, naturist and one of the most famous scientists of our time. He was born in 1809.

He sailed around he world for 5 years. Everywhere he went he collected a bug or a thing. He was the one who found out about the theory of evolution and the survival of the fittest. He also came up with Natural Selection.

Natural selection is when the animals can blend into its environment. Like if there was a white bird it would survive in the snow and not the forest. Where is fits in is where it doesn't get eaten and stays alive.

He took 20 years to publish his book because he had to fight with the church's about God and their view on how animals were created. He believes that everything  evolves to suit their environment, including humans. The church didn't like that.

He finally went on to publish his book but lots of people even today don't believe it. He lived a very long life.

Grammar - lesson 4 adverbs

Adverbs are when you add to the verb.  You ask how  the noun - usually a person or thing, does the action. For example if the verb is walk, you ask how fast did the man walk? The adverb can be slowly. He walked slowly. The ly is the adverb but sometimes there is other adverbs.

France is 640679km squared.
France has 66.03 million  people.

Did you know you can fit France into Australia 14 times.
The flag colours are blue, red and white. The red stands for saint Denis

Music lesson 3

This weeks music lesson looked at unusual musical instruments from around the world.

Her is a leaf flute that comes from Australia. All you need is a gum leaf and blow across it.

A bagpipe that comes from Scotland. Did you know that there are also bagpipes in Spain? A bagpipe is a big bag with pipes sticking out of it and you blow into one pipe with holes  and a reed in it and you squeeze he bag to keep the noise going.

And a bird box that comes from Switzerland.  We went to a musical museum this week and saw one working. It was amazing.

I would also recommend watching this Video to see how it works and what it sounds like.

Adjectives are describing words.
They describe how big or small or anything else. So this is how it would describe the word a large elephant. Large was the adjective in that sentence.

Maths lesson 3 - timetables

Times tables is when you multiply a number like 4 into 4 rows and you get 16. The number sentence goes like this: 4x4=16.

Science - sound

I have been learning things about sound.

Sound is a form of energy and travels through the air as waves.

Did you know the higher the pitch the sound waves are closer and the lower the pitch the further the waves are apart?

Sound waves need air to travel. Sound waves travel at 340m per second.

The reason we hear is we have a drum in our ear and the waves hit the drum.

Geography Report - Spain

Spain is best known for wine, paella, tapas and bullfighting. Spain is located in Europe.

Spain is 504,645 km squared. You could fit Spain into Australia 15 times.

There are 47,066,402 people in Spain. There are five main languages spoken in Spain which are Portuguese, Spanish, Basque, Catalan and Occitan.

The government is parliamentary democracy.
Spain's currency is euros.

Spain's most eaten food is paella or tapas.

The most famous thing in Spain is the Bullfighting. I think that bullfighting is cruel.

There is a festival called la Tomatin and its a festival for tomatoes and people throw tomatoes at each other. I think its really funny and lots of fun to do.  Did you that in one town they have a limit on how many people are allowed to do this? its 20 000. Can you imagine 20 000 people throwing tomatoes at you?

Important things that happened in Spain included discovering America and the Spanish Armada. Christopher Columbus was a famous adventurer from Spain. He discovered  America in 1502, beginning an era of exploration and conquest for the Spanish.

In 1588 the British forces defeated the Spanish Armada , or navy.

Famous Spanish people are Antonio Banderas, is the person who had the voice of puss in boots in shriek and puss in boots the movies and Salvador Dalí,  is an artist that made melting clocks, couchs that look like lips - we went to his museum in Paris last year -  and Hernán Cortés is the person who conquered South America and stole all the Aztec gold.

On the flag of Spain has two colours red stands for hardness, bravery and strength and yellow stands for generosity , the Spanish coat of arms symbolises the country , the old kingdoms of Spain , the royal crown and the constitution monarchy. The national animal is a lion and a ipomoea flower.

The normal houses are usually big houses. The houses we saw when we walked the camino were normally very poor. The houses had no toilet or bathrooms inside because they were so poor.

One of the points of interest that you might want to see is the royal palace of Madrid and the beach of la concha. They are amazing because the beach of la concha is on of the most famous urban beaches in Europe, and the royal palace is the official residence of the Spanish royal family at the City of Madrid.

Feedback
Lilly, this is excellent! You have started to really do your research and find things which are interesting.

In your future reports, I'd love to see more personal information, especially as we  are travelling though alot of these places. How about the Camino?

Feedback

Lilly this looks wonderful Just add a few more things and I think we will have a good copy in draft 2!
Please add in a map of Spain.
How does Spain compare to Australia as far as its size? Remember we divide how big Australia is by how big the country is.  How many times would Spain fit into Australia?
Can you please explain what paella is and what tapas is.
Please write something about the Camino! we spent 3 months in Spain - so please write something about your experiences there and what you saw.
I love your sentence on the flag, but you need to put some punctuation in it.
Think about he houses we saw as we walked on the Camino. What did they look like?  What were they made of?
what is the Spanish emblem or animal or flower?
what famous people come from Spain?
What is the camino?  Lots of people go to Spain just to do that. Why?
What do you think about bullfighting?

Science Lesson - solid liquid and gas

Today we looked at physical properties of matter.

Did you know that water can exist in 3 states? A gas, liquid or solid.

When you put a liquid on a stove and heat it up and put it on 100 degrees celsius it turns into steam which is a gas.

When you put a liquid in a freezer at 0 degrees celsius it turns into ice which is a solid liquid. Heating ice will change it back to a liquid.Steam can be changed back to a liquid by cooling it down. This process is called condensation.

Here are some facts. Water has 3 states of matter gas, liquid and solid. The three states are known as steam water and ice. Water boilers at 100 degrees celsius. Water freezes at 0 degrees celsius. The scientific name for water is h2o.

Map of the world- Geography

Today we looked  at the globe and the continents of the world.

On my maps I have drawn a blue line where we have been. We have been up and down Queensland and all the way down to Melbourne and Geelong. We have been to New Zealand, Fiji and Vanuatu a few times.  We have been to Europe twice and spent a lot of time there.
