Geography Report - Australia

Over the next few weeks, we will be researching some different countries. As an exemplar, we researched Australia and answered the questions Mum has given us to help us find the important information out about the country we are looking at.  We did the research and read the information and then answered he questions in our own words. This report is a combined one between Lilly and Morgan.

Australia is knows as the largest Island. It is known as somewhere hot and full of deadly creatures.

Australia is between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

Australia is 7692024 km2 and 23 130 000 people live there. English is the main language spoken & 6 % of people speak English as their first language. Other languages include Mandarin- 1.6% Italian - 1.4%, Arabic- 1.3 %, Cantonese-1.2%  and Greek 1.2 %.

Australia is governed by a Federal Monarchy. This means that the  federation of states with a single monarch ( queen Elizabeth) is the over all head of the federation but they have no real power over the country. The government who runs the country is based on a parliamentary system. This means that every person over 18 votes for a party to rule the government.

Australia has a blue flag. It has three elements, the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross. The union Jack represents the history of British Settlement. The Commonwealth Star represents each of the states and territories in Australia.   The Southern Cross represents the stars which helped ships to navigate to Australia. It is on the Eureka flag which represents freedom and democracy.

Australia's national currently is the Australian dollar. It comes in 5, 10, 20 , 50  and 100 dollar notes cents and in 5, 10, 20 , 50, 1 and 2 dollar coins. Some of the pictures on the notes are Dame Nelly Melba who was a opera singer, Banjo Patterson who was a famous poet, aboriginal inventor and writer David Unaipon and the founder of the  royal  flying doctor service, Rev John Flynn.

The symbol of Australia is the kangaroo. Each state has a symbol and it is on the National Coat of  Arms there are the kangaroo and the emu. They were chosen as the national animals as they are the only animals who cannot go backwards. This is important symbol for Australia to keep everyone focus d on going forward.

A common thing for people in Australia to eat is vegemite. Vegemite is a salty spread that you put on bread or toast. I like it.

Other typical Australia dishes are Lamingtons ( A cake bite that has chocolate and coconut around it) meat pies, meringues  and pavlova ( a whipped egg white dessert with fruit and cream) ANZAC Bikkies ( an oat biscuit), Tim Tams ( a biscuit dipped in chocolate) Fantales ( a chewy caramel sweet covered in chocolate) sausage rolls and roast lamb.

In Australia they celebrate different things like, Easter where people go camping, Christmas where people eat prawns and go to the beach, Australia Day where people have a BBQ and eat lamingtons, ANZAC day where people either march in a parade or watch the parade to commemorate the wars and the soldiers who fought in them.

Most people in Australia have a house with a backyard.

Australia was first settled by Europeans in 1788 where convicts were sent to live. The Goldrush happened in 1851. The Eureka Stockade 1854 where miners rebelled and fought for their rights. Australia became a nation in 1901.

Some of the famous people who are from Australia include Sir Don Bradman, Hugh Jackman, Steve Irwin and Cathy Freeman, Burke and Wills.

Steve Irwin was a wild animal conservationist and fought for the the preservation of wildlife.

Burke and Wills were a pair of explorers who set off to discover the centre of Australia in 1860 but sadly they died.

If you were going to be a tourist in Australia the things you should see are Australia Zoo, Ayres Rock, Sydney Opera House, The Great Barrier Reef, The Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Stockmans Hall of Fame, Th Min Min lights in Boulia.

Science - Skin

This week we looked at the structure of skin in science.

The skin keeps the inside of your body inside your body and keeps what's outside of your body outside.

The skin is 2mm thick.

Skin has three layers the first layer is called the epidermis which is really tough, The second layer is called the dermis it has the nerves and sweat glands, the third layer is all the fat.

This is what skin looks like if you looked at it really close.

Eureka Stockade - my History Report

I am learning to write reports. this is my third ( and final) on a report on the Eureka Stockade.

The eureka stockade is a important part of Australia's history.

The Eureka stockade was in Ballarat,Victoria. The actual stockade was built on baker hill. They mined gold around Ballarat during the Goldrush. The people who mined for gold called themselves the diggers.

The men came together at about 8 o'clock on the 2nd of December 1854 and created a distinct place where the men could muster and be drilled.

The battle lasted for 15 mins. 23 diggers and 15 troopers died. The leaders name was Peter lawler. They were hoping to get the government to put the price of the license down and to stop the troopers beating up the diggers. The person in charge, Peter Lawler,  was shot during the battle. When they were raided there was only 120 people in the stockade because the other men were told different rumours that people were coming from all over the place, so they all went out into the bush to fight them.

The flag was a southern cross with a blue background. It was called the Eureka flag.

The Eureka Stockade is a very important event in Australian History as its the birthplace of our democracy and government.

Feedback.
Great first report Lilly. You have explained a number of events which lead up to and during the rebellion.

Remember to use capital letters for peoples names and places.

Science Lesson - what is light

We are looking at alot of science concepts. Todays was about light. I have to write notes and write a blog on what I remember.

Light travels from a source.

The sun is the source of light in our solar system.

We can also create our own source of light. We need light to see at night time.

Light reflects off objects that can't pass light through.

The light goes into our eyes. Our eyes change light into electrical impulses. Messages of what we see are then sent to the brain. That's why we can see things.

Shadows are made  when light can't pass through an object. It leaves an exact shape of the object.

Eureka Stockade - Second Draft.

I am learning to write reports. this is my second draft on a report on the Eureka Stockade. ( Mums suggestions and mark ups are in capitals)

The eureka stockade is a important part of Australia's history. CAPITAL LETTERS FOR THE NAME OF A PLACE OR EVENT

The Eureka stockade was in Ballarat,Victoria. The actual stockade was built on baker hill. They mined gold around Ballarat during the Goldrush. The people who mined for gold themselves diggers.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DIGGERS TO MAKE THEM FEEL LIKE REBELLING?

The men came together at about 8 o'clock on the 2nd of December 1854 and created a distinct place where the men could muster and be drilled. There was 10000 diggers. ( PLEASE CHECK THIS NUMBER. I THINK IT WAS LESS THAN THIS)

The battle lasted for 15 mins. 23 diggers and 15 troopers died. MORE NEEDED HERE.
WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF THE REBELLION? WHAT WERE THEY HOPING TO ACHIEVE? WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PERSON IN CHARGE?   HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE IN THE STOCKADE WHEN IT WAS RAIDED?  WHERE WERE EVERYONE ELSE?

The flag was a southern cross with a blue background. WHAT FLAG?

CONCLUSION - WHAT CHANGED?  WHAT DID THE GOVERNMENT DO FROM THEN ONWARD? WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT TO AUSTRALIA AND TO THE WORKFORCE?

Book review A fairy princess has been here

In the book it tells you about a little girl called Jamie solving a mystery about  a fairy princess being in her house.

The first clue was that there was sparkles on the floor and only a fairy drops fairy sparkle dust. Then she finds a note that has purple pen writing on it and it says " dear Jamie I love you and don't ever forget it! F.P" and F.P stands for fairy princess.

Next she finds a cup with tea in it and it is proof she's been there.  She finds a box that says my prince and has a bunch of pictures inside it. In the bathroom she finds fairy dust (makeup) and a fairy definitely needs makeup. At last her mum calls her and her mum was going on a date and Jamie gets a baby sitter.

I would give it a 9/10 I really like this fairy princess story.

Bushrangers - John "black" Caesar. The first Bushranger

John Black Caesar was born on 1763. The reason we know who he is is because he was the first Australian bushrangers. He was also the first African Convict

John 'Black' Caesar was from Africa. he was a servant in Kent before he got caught. His actual name was John caesar but he got a nick name and his nickname was black.

The reason he ran away was because he was a convict and convicts had to work hard and didn't get much food.

None of his crimes were violent he just stole stuff.

He was finally captured by the police and shot.

Goldrush in Australia - History lesson

1851 is when the magnificent goldrush began in Australia in Victoria.

The richest goldfields where near Ballarat. People all around the world came to dig for gold, especially the Chinese.

One way miners used to separate gold from dirt and gravel was called panning.

Today we tried doing it ourselves. We picked up the sand put it in the pan then washed it out and found specks of crystals. There wasn't any gold there.

I think I'm very glad that I'm not doing a job all day everyday. I don't think I'd like it.

Star - my first poem

I have been learning about poems and wrote my own here.  Mum says its really good.

Star

Light bright
in the air
bright my night
send me a wish
looking down
at the world
from high above
like a bird
lofty softly
in the sky

I'm not much good with rhyming but mum said poems don't need to rhyme.
