Stop Smoking!

Lilly and I were waiting outside a community hall today and decided to sit on the seat just outside the door.

A man walked out of the door and sat beside us and pulled out his cigerettes and lit up.

With out missing a beat, Lilly said "That sign says no smoking here".

He flushed and smiled, replying, "You're right there little missy, sorry - its your air too hey?"

and with that he walked the appropriate 4 mtrs away from the building ot continue his cigarette.

bless her!!!

Daddys Know everything

"How do you know when I am tired and need a snack Daddy? It must be daddy magic."

Daddies know when small peoples legs are about to fall off and become bloody stumps.. and when they need a snack and a drink... aren't they wonderful to have around?

Fireworks explained.

Fireworks is like exploding bubble wrap.

We were watching a fireworks display and Lilly made the observation that they sounded just like bubble wrap exploding.

Coal for the Bad Children.....

"Hey I didn’t get any coal…. I’m amazed."

Again this is not a Lilly Lou says – but something that Morgan said after reviewing all of his presents and considering the amount of room that Santa had to have in his bag.

I asked Morgan why he was amazed and he seriously looked at me with his big blue eyes and said I was a bit mean to Lilly this year.

Lilly then piped up – hands on hips, “Well, I’ve been good and I don’t need any coal.”

Morgan just looked at her and shook his head….. as did we all…. Then we ran round the corner and laughed lots.

Just in case you don't know - it was a threat that if you had been bad during the year - Santa would only leave coal in your stocking.

The Blood Shop

I often speak aloud when formulating my list of things I need to do in the day. I hope it helps my kids understand that you need to plan ahead for things and what is required to do so.

Lilly pipped up this morning – you need to go to the blood shop.

What would I be buying there Lilly Lou? I asked.

She looked at me as if I were an insect. “Blood Mummy”. and then rolled her eyes. ( who needs a teenager in the house when you have a three year old?)

“I’m not sure I need blood today sweetheart” I replied.

“Yes we do. We need sausages and steak for the BBQ too.”

I have never been one to hide any facts of life from the kids – and they are well aware that an animal has been killed, skinned and cut up in order for us to eat it. It is interesting that Lilly has worked out that the butcher is a place full of blood.

Watch this vegetarian space… maybe..

Lilly Claims Motherhood

She is such a little darling.

"When can I be a mummy?"

I patently tell her that she needs to grow up and have her own house before she can do this. I ask her if she wants to be anything when she grows up – doctor, vet, nurse, teacher, dancer, actress?

No – she is animate that she wants to be a mummy.

“I want a baby in my tummy. Can I have it now?” she says.

Why darling I ask – really interested now.

So that we can play ladies and you can sing and give me a beads.

I might like to explain here that yesterday I held a sacred women’s space at home – a Blessing Way – which honored a girlfriends path through pregnancy and into motherhood.

My girlfriend is delightfully round and we painted her tummy with henna – as well as underwent the web and the birthing blanket ceremonies. It was a wonderful experience- and one that impacted Lilly a lot – obviously. She had been invited to attend and I thought she was more interested in looking around – rather than paying attention to what was going on – but no – she had picked it all up.

I feel relieved that she feels that mother hood is as important a role than any other – even at this age. I also notice its quite difficult not to fall into stereotypical answers and I try to answer with openness and objectivity.
